Uniform Specifications for Foodgrains
Indian Grain Storage Management and Research Institute
In order to develop facilities for applied research and apex level training in the field of foodgrain storage and preservation, a Grain Storage Research and Training Centre was established at Hapur in 1958 which was later on expanded into Indian Grain Storage Institute (IGSI) with two field stations at Ludhiana and Bapatla (later shifted to Hyderabad) with the financial assistance from UNDP in 1968. Three field stations at Jabalpur, Jorhat and Udaipur were subsequently established in 1981. In 1996 the IGSI was renamed as Indian Grain Storage Management and Research Institute (IGMRI). Field Stations at Jabalpur and Udaipur have however been closed w.e.f. October 2002. While the Research and Development and Training activities are under taken by IGMRI, the work of popularising scientific methods of foodgrain storage developed by IGMRI among farming community is implemented through the Save Grain Campaign teams.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of the Institute are:
- To develop code of practices for proper grain storage and handling by recommending cost effective techniques for control of insects, rodent, birds and micro organisms;
- To investigate the nature, extent and degree of losses due to these factors under different agro-climatic conditions ;
- To develop improved type of storage structures, grain dryers, grain handling, cleaning and grading equipment besides, improvement in traditional storage structures using locally available and Eco-friendly materials.
- To develop suitable publicity material and semi-technical literature on grain storage and quality control in foodgrain;
- To train personnel from various organisations viz. FCI,CWC, SWCs, Civil Supplies Corporations etc. as well as trainees from developing countries sponsored by FAO, UNDP and Commonwealth Secretariat on Grain Storage Management Practices.
ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE
The main functions and activities of IGMRI are as follows :
Pest Control & Storage Division
Testing of new insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides and non-chemical methods for control of stored grain insects, rats, mites and fungi.
- Assessment of foodgrain losses and their quantitative and qualitative estimation.
- Evaluation of pest control methods and development of code of practices for safe storage of foodgrains.
- Study on Insecticidal / pesticidal resistance in stored grain insect / pest.
- Monitoring of pesticide residues and mycotoxin contamination in foodgrains.
TrainingTRAINING DIVISION
The IGMRI, Hapur and its field stations at Hyderabad, Jorhat and Ludhiana conduct the following certificate courses.
- Long Term Training Course (two months duration) on "Scientific Methods of Storage and Inspections of foodgrains" for the officials of Food Corporation of India, Central Warehousing corporation, Civil Supplies Corporation, candidates sponsored by Agricultural Universities and private candidates graduated in Agriculture/ Biology/Chemistry as well as trainees from developing countries sponsored by FAO, UNDP, Commonwealth Secretariat and Colombo Plan etc.
- Short Term Training / refreshers courses ( 1-2 weeks duration ) on:
- a. Storage Pest Management and Fumigation
b. Pesticide Residue Analysis
c. Chemical and physical analysis of foodgrain
d. Rodent control.
- Specialised Training Course (two weeks duration) on Post Harvest Technology of foodgrains.
Artisan training course (ten days duration) for the rural Artisans on the fabrication of modern and traditional storage structures.
