THE NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY BILL, 2011
The President of India in her address to the Joint Session of Parliament on 4th
June, 2009, announced that the Government proposes to enact a new law – the
National Food Security Act – that will provide a statutory basis for a framework
which assures food security for all. In pursuance of the above, a draft National
Food Security Bill was prepared by the Department of Food & Public Distribution
after holding consultations with various stakeholders. The draft Bill was
considered and approved by the Cabinet in its meeting held on 18.12.2011, for
introduction in Parliament. The National Food Security Bill, 2011 has been
introduced in Lok Sabha on 22nd December, 2011.
